The research on the health benefits of garlic are no where near what the health food industry would have you believe.  Still, I like the flavor.  I wouldn't spend extra money on garlic supplements.  I know the page is not up to date, but I gave up on hoping to find exciting health benefits from garlic.

Garlic No Benefit for Blood Lipids in Normals: In a DB PC 12-week study of dried garlic (Allium sativum) powder on blood lipids, blood pressure and arterial stiffness on 75 normal adults ages 40-60, no significant benefit was found for garlic on HDL , LDL , blood pressure, or arterial flexibility. Garlic was associated with a near-significant decrease (12 %) in triacylglycerol concentration (P=0.07). Effect of garlic (Allium sativum) powder tablets on serum lipids, blood pressure and arterial stiffness in normo-lipidaemic volunteers: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Garlic No Benefit Kids Familial Hyperlipemias: 30 kids ages 8-18 in DB PC with Kwai garlic found no benefit total chol, HDL, Lp(a), homocysteine, BP, TG, fibrinogen or Lp B-100. McCrindle, U Toronto, Arch Ped Adole Med 11/98;152:1089.

Garlic No Benefit Adults with Hyperlipemia: 25 adults DB PC 5 g BID steam distilled garlic oil for 12 weeks. No benefit lipoprotein profile or decreased cholesterol synthesis or absorption. Berthold, U Bonn, JAMA 6/17/98;279:1900

Garlic No Benefit Adults with Hyperlipemia: 50 adults DB PC 300mg Kwai garlic powder TID 12 weeks. No benefit lipoprotein profile or total chol. Isaacsohn, Cincinnati, Arch Int Med 6/98;158:1189

Garlic Helps Hyperlipemia, More with Fish Oil: 50 adult hyperlipemics Rx DB PC garlic 900mg/d and/or fish oil 12g/d. Garlic decr total chol 11%, combo 12%, fish alone %. LDL 9% lower combo, 14% lower garlic, 8% high fish oil alone. TG 34% lower with combo and 37% lower with fish oil. Adler, U Guelph, Am J Clin Nutr ’97;65:445. (Ed: even if garlic lowers, no evidence that it help life)

Garlic & Linseed Help Mice: long-term dietary application of garlic (dried powder, 0.5% in weight of standard chow; G group) or linseed oil (2.5%; L group) as well as a combination of both interventions (L G group) on the life span of hypertensive rats (SHR SP) was investigated. A further group fed with standard chow served as control (C). The dietary interventions were started at the age of three weeks. Besides regular measurements of the systolic arterial blood pressure (oscillometrically at the tail artery) as well as of heart rate and body weight, autopsy and histological investigations were performed. Both diets, and particularly their combination, prolonged life span significantly (mean values (days) C: 434.5 23.5; G: 453.2 16.2; L: 470.0 26.2; L G: 494.8 39.2). There was no significant interaction of the factors garlic and linseed oil. Systolic blood pressure as measured during the compensatory stage (data used until the 39th week of life) was significantly lowered by both garlic (mean -5.8 mm Hg), linseed oil (mean -6.3 mm Hg), and their combination (mean -11.3 mm Hg). Aged Garlic Helps Hyperlipemia a Little: 41 adults DB PC 6 mo 7.2g/d age garlic extract resulted in 6% lower total chol, 4% lower LDL, 5% lower systolic BP. Steiner, Pawtucket, Am J Clin Nutr 12/96;64:866

Garlic No Benefit Hyperlip Tho Meta-Analysis Says is: 115 mod hyperlipemics DB PC 6 mo 300mg/d dried garlic at 1.3% allicin. No effect on lipid profile. Neil, Oxford, J R Coll Physicians Lond 7/96;30:329. Many older studies.

Garlic Minimal Benefit for Intermittent Claudication: DB PC 12 weeks found a statistically signif benefit but very minimal with an incr in walking distance increased from 160 to 207 vs from 170 to 203 in control. Germany, Clin investig ’93;71:383
